About the role

Messente develops business messaging and authentication APIs used by companies around the world. Our platform handles over 700 million SMS messages a year, so high throughput, availability, and reliability are part of our everyday engineering work.

We're looking for an experienced Product Backend Engineer to join our Omni squad and help us build new messaging and authentication products.

This role is for someone who enjoys figuring out what needs to be built, not just implementing what's already been decided. You'll work with stakeholders to understand problems, explore solutions, make architectural decisions, and take features from initial idea to production.

You won't always get a detailed specification, and that's intentional. We're looking for someone who's comfortable making decisions and taking responsibility for the outcome.

Location: Remote-friendly, preferably Estonia (Tallinn or Tartu) or a compatible European time zone.

Type: Full-time employment or B2B contract.

Compensation: Starting from €5,000 gross/month, depending on experience and skills.

What you'll do

  • Design and develop new messaging and authentication APIs, including WhatsApp, RCS, and network-based authentication.
  • Own features end-to-end, from researching solutions and making architectural decisions to implementation and production delivery.
  • Develop and improve high-throughput, high-availability backend services, keeping performance and reliability in mind.
  • Work directly with stakeholders and other engineers to understand requirements, evaluate different approaches, and make technical decisions.

You'll fit in this role if you

  • Have solid backend development experience and have independently taken features from an initial idea to production.
  • Enjoy understanding the problem behind a requirement and thinking through possible solutions before starting to code.
  • Can make feature-level architectural decisions and explain the trade-offs behind them.
  • Are comfortable working independently without detailed instructions for every step.
  • Understand reliability and performance in production backend systems; experience with high-availability or high-throughput services is a plus.
  • Communicate well with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Are curious, willing to challenge existing approaches, and open to learning new tools and technologies.
  • Are comfortable using AI tools in your development workflow and interested in exploring how they can improve your work.

We're not looking for someone who knows everything. What matters is that you've built things independently, can explain your decisions, and care about whether the final solution actually works.

Our tech stack

We work mainly with Go, Python, PostgreSQL, Redis, HAProxy, Ansible, and Linux.

We're gradually modernizing our infrastructure, moving from Hetzner-hosted systems towards AWS and Kubernetes. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to this transition, but previous AWS or Kubernetes experience isn't required.

Strong backend development skills and the ability to take ownership of features matter more to us than experience with every technology in our stack.

A bit about the team

Messente has been profitable for over 10 years with a team of around 30 people. You'll join our Omni squad, working alongside two experienced engineers.

We're a small engineering team where developers have real ownership of their work and a direct impact on the product. You'll have the freedom to explore solutions, make technical decisions, and see your ideas through to production.

As we continue growing & developing new messaging and authentication products, you'll have opportunities to work on challenging technical problems, broaden your expertise, and grow your responsibilities.

We value flexibility, trust, and ownership. In 2026, Messente's CEO Uku Tomikas received the "Hybrid Work Shaper of the Year" award for fostering a flexible, trust-based working culture.
