Carus builds the reservation, ticketing and port systems behind more than 33 million passenger and 5 million vehicle journeys a year, for operators running everything from Baltic short sea routes to the Alaska Marine Highway's 3,500-mile network across 38 terminals. In that business, SMS isn't a nice-to-have channel, it's part of the product.
When the weather closes a port or a sailing is rescheduled, that puts Carus in a difficult position: it must guarantee delivery to travelers who, almost by definition, are roaming outside their home network, in whichever country their operator happens to sail.
Meeting that guarantee through local SMS gateways meant a separate commercial and technical relationship in every market. Each one carried its own integration work, its own pricing, and its own quirks, and the further a route sat from Western Europe, the worse the economics and reliability got. In markets like Tanzania, cost and deliverability became a real constraint on where Carus's customers could operate.
The patchwork also aged badly: every new route or acquisition meant another gateway to onboard and maintain, so the maintenance burden grew with the client base rather than flattening out. For a company whose value proposition is that operators shouldn't have to think about IT, messaging had become the exception.
Carus consolidated everything onto Messente. Instead of a gateway per market, there is a single API integration that routes each message through the best available path in whichever of 197 markets the recipient happens to be: the routing logic, carrier relationships and local compliance sit on Messente's side, not in Carus's stack
That inverts the old economics: adding a new country stops being an integration project and becomes a configuration detail, so Carus's operators can open a route in Tanzania on the same terms as one in Finland.
Just as importantly, it's a connection that stays connected. The integration was built once and doesn't need ongoing maintenance, which removes an entire class of work from Carus's roadmap - no gateway migrations when a local provider changes terms, no per-market debugging when delivery rates slip.
Messente is now extending the same integration to rich messaging with WhatsApp and Viber, so Carus can meet passengers on the channel they actually use in a given market without touching the underlying plumbing again.
